How To Prepare For Your Commercial Photo Session(s)

Portrait Photographer, Pamela Dunn-Parrish

Preparing For Team Photos

General Guidelines

  1. Coordinate Colors: Choose a color scheme that aligns with your company's branding. Neutral colors like white, black, gray, navy, and beige often work well. You can also incorporate a pop of color that represents your brand.

  2. Consistent Style: Ensure that everyone’s attire is consistent in terms of formality. Decide if the dress code is business formal, business casual, or casual, and ensure everyone adheres to it.

  3. Avoid Patterns: Solid colors are generally better for photos than patterns, which can be distracting. Avoid very bold patterns, logos, or graphics.

  4. Fit and Comfort: Clothes should fit well and be comfortable. Ill-fitting clothes can appear unprofessional and can be distracting in photos.

Specific Suggestions

  • Tops: Collared shirts, blouses, or tailored tops work well. For a more casual look, polo shirts or high-quality t-shirts can be appropriate.
  • Bottoms: Depending on the formality, tailored pants, skirts, or dark jeans are good choices. Avoid shorts unless the setting is very casual.
  • Layers: Blazers, cardigans, or sweaters can add a polished look and help create visual interest.
  • Accessories: Keep accessories simple and professional. Minimal jewelry and watches are usually best.
  • Footwear: Shoes should be clean and in good condition. Depending on the formality, dress shoes, loafers, or smart casual shoes are appropriate.

Preparing for the Shoot

  • Dress Code Communication: Clearly communicate the dress code to your team in advance.
  • Grooming: Ensure everyone is well-groomed. Neat hair, clean nails, and a tidy appearance contribute to a professional image.
  • Test Shots: If possible, take a few test shots to see how the chosen outfits look on camera.

By following these guidelines, your team will look cohesive and professional, which will give a positive reflection on your business.

How to Prepare for a Basic Headshot

Whether you need a headshot for a professional profile, acting portfolio, or personal branding, preparing well can make a significant difference in the final result.

 Understand Your Purpose

Before anything else, clarify why you need the headshot. Different purposes may require different styles. For example:

  • Corporate headshots usually call for a formal look.
  • Acting headshots need to show a range of expressions.
  • Personal branding might be more relaxed and creative.

Plan Your Wardrobe

Your outfit should align with the purpose of your headshot. Here are some tips:

  • Keep it simple: Solid colors often work best. Avoid busy patterns or logos.
  • Fit and comfort: Wear something that fits well and makes you feel confident.
  • Multiple options: Bring a few different outfits to the shoot to see what works best on camera.
 Prepare Your Hair and Makeup

Both hair and makeup should complement your natural look.

  • Hair: Style your hair neatly. If you’re due for a haircut, schedule it about a week before the shoot.
  • Makeup: Keep makeup natural and avoid anything too bold. If you’re unsure, consider hiring a professional makeup artist who has experience with photography.

 Rest and Hydrate

A good night’s sleep can make a huge difference in your appearance. Aim to get at least 7-8 hours of rest the night before. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your shoot.

 Practice Expressions

Spend some time in front of a mirror practicing different expressions. You want to look natural and approachable. Try to convey confidence and friendliness with your eyes and smile.

Day of the Shoot

  • Arrive early: Give yourself plenty of time to get to the location.
  • Stay relaxed: Take deep breaths and stay calm. The more relaxed you are, the better your photos will turn out.
  • Communicate: Don’t be afraid to tell your photographer if you’re uncomfortable or if there’s something specific you want to achieve.

Conclusion

Preparing for a headshot doesn’t have to be stressful. By understanding your goals, planning your outfit, and taking care of yourself, you can ensure you’ll get a headshot that you’re proud to share.

I will be with you to guide and help you.  My goal is to get the best headshot of you and help you feel relaxed and successful.

Planning Your Commercial Product Photo Session: A Step-by-Step Guide

Great product photos are essential for any business looking to attract customers and drive sales. Whether you’re launching a new product line or updating your online store, planning a successful commercial product photo session requires careful preparation. Here’s how to ensure your shoot goes smoothly and yields the best possible results.

Define Your Goals - Planning Session

Before diving into the logistics, clearly define what you want to achieve with your product photos. Consider:

  • Purpose: Are the photos for your website, social media, print ads, or all of the above?
  • Style: Do you need simple white background shots, lifestyle images, or detailed close-ups?
  • Quantity: How many products need to be photographed, and how many photos of each?

 Choose the Right Photographer

Thank you for choosing me.  My goal is to achieve the images you need and want for your business, website, marketing and social media.

Selecting the right photographer is critical to the success of your shoot. Look for a professional with experience in product photography and a portfolio that aligns with your vision. Discuss your goals and ensure they understand your brand’s aesthetic.

 Plan Your Budget

Determine your budget early on. Include costs for:

  • Photographer fees
  • Multiple photo sessions
  • Props and backgrounds

Create a Shot List - This will be reviewed at our planning session

A detailed shot list ensures you cover all necessary angles and styles. For each product, specify:

  • Type of shot: Front, back, side, top-down, detailed close-ups, lifestyle contexts, etc.
  • Props and background: Any additional items or settings needed for the photo.

 Prepare Your Products

Ensure all products are in perfect condition before the shoot. This includes:

  • Cleaning: Remove any dust, fingerprints, or smudges.
  • Assembly: Make sure all parts are correctly assembled and functional.
  • Labeling: Remove any unnecessary labels or stickers that shouldn’t appear in the final photo.

 Select Props and Backgrounds

Props and backgrounds can enhance your product photos and convey the right message. Consider:

  • Props: Items that complement or showcase the product’s use.
  • Backgrounds: Simple backgrounds for clean, focused shots or more complex settings for lifestyle images.

 Organize Logistics

Coordinate all logistical aspects of the shoot to ensure everything runs smoothly:

  • Location: Confirm the shoot location (studio or on-site) and ensure it has adequate space and lighting.
  • Schedule: Create a detailed schedule, including setup, shoot, and breakdown times.
  • Team: Ensure all team members (photographer, assistants, stylists) are aware of their roles and the timeline.

Day of the Shoot

On the day of the shoot:

  • Arrive early: Allow plenty of time for setup and any last-minute adjustments.
  • I will keep you organized: Keep products and props organized to ensure a smooth workflow.
  • I will show you our progress: Regularly review the shots to ensure they meet your expectations and make adjustments as needed.

Conclusion

Planning a successful commercial product photo session involves meticulous preparation and attention to detail. Our Planning session (conversations) are very important and the time is worth it. By clearly defining your goals, place, preparing your products, and coordinating logistics, you can achieve stunning product photos that effectively showcase your brand and drive sales.
